Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) is an action spy sequel directed by Christopher McQuarrie, serving as the eighth installment and direct sequel to Dead Reckoning Part One. Tom Cruise reprises Ethan Hunt in his final portrayal, joined by Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett, as the IMF team works to stop the rogue AI known as the Entity from destroying humanity. The project, initially planned as back-to-back with Part One, underwent cast and crew changes, faced a SAG-AFTRA strike, and filmed across England, Malta, South Africa, and Norway. Initially subtitled Dead Reckoning Part Two, the film—budgeted at 300–400 million—was retitled The Final Reckoning in 2024, premiered in Tokyo on May 5, 2025, screened at Cannes on May 14, and released in the U.S. on May 23 by Paramount Pictures. It received positive critical reception, grossing approximately 598.8 million worldwide and marking the franchise’s largest opening weekend, while also representing the last co-production as Paramount and Skydance before their 2025 merger.
Plot
Two months after obtaining the Entity’s source-code key, rogue IMF agent Ethan Hunt refuses President Sloane’s demand to surrender it and pursues Gabriel, the Entity’s failed proxy. In London, Ethan and Benji learn of a plan to use the Sevastopol’s Podkova to control the Entity. After Gabriel captures Ethan and Grace, they escape and learn Luther Stickell’s Poison Pill malware can weaponize the Entity. Theo Degas and Paris join, guiding to Gabriel’s location. Gabriel’s forces capture Ethan and Grace; the Entity demands the key, threatening nuclear devastation. Luther dies saving Ethan; Ethan, with Sloane’s approval, seeks the Sevastopol. Grace, Degas, Paris, and Donloe race to locate the coordinates on St. Matthew Island, while Ethan navigates ships and submarines to reach the Sevastopol, retrieve the Podkova, and avert disaster with Grace’s help. At the bunker, Gabriel seizes the bomb; Kittridge and the team defuse it and trap the Entity using the Podkova. The plan succeeds, but a nuclear launch is narrowly prevented as the Entity is contained. Luther’s farewell message plays as the Podkova self-destructs; Briggs, revealed as Jim Phelps’s son, reconciles with Ethan. Reunited, Grace hands Ethan the drive containing the Entity, and the IMF team parts ways in London.
